East Thompson Street
P.8513.230 Photographer's manuscript note on verso: An entire row of old frame houses in Fishtown, Phila. Thompson and _______ Sts. These houses were recently torn down (1923) to make way for a playground.
Wilson managed to capture this image of these extremely narrow wood-frame row houses just before they were torn down. The Fire Insurance Atlas from 1922 (below) shows this narrow row of homes bordering the Hanover Street Burial Ground. Barely legible on the closest building is “Polar Bear” and a sign advertising oysters and clams, suggesting that the establishment had refrigeration, a notable achievement for such a lower-class area and building.
