RESEARCH ON BUILDING

In the 1889 Atlas of the City of Philadelphia, the house appeared on the map, but Greer's name isn't on the map.
[The property's too small to mention the owner's name? // The Greer family hadn't owned the house yet?]

RESEARCH ON OWNER

According to Boyd's city directory of 1900, Greer worked for Bellevue Worsted Mills.

Notably, the name appeared on 1899 atlas of the city of Philadelphia for Greer's residence was not Benjamin W Greer, but "Elizabeth A. Greer". According to the 1900 U.S. Census data, Elizabeth A. Greer was Benjamin's spouse, and they were married in 1881. More information about Greer can be found in the Census data: By the time of 1900, Henry L. Townsend was 42 years old. While Benjamin was born in Pennsylvania, his father came from Ireland and his mother from Scottland. His occupation was mentioned as "Mfr Cotton Goods".

Unlike the Census records of lots of other Germantown households, in which at least three or four servants may be listed under household members, Greer's household only has one name outside of the people under family name. Also, the size of Greer's residence is not as grand as other handsome homes listed in the book, which together might indicate that his family is relatively less privileged as other upper middle class families living in Germantown.

The Greer residence no longer exists today, and another house occupied the original site of Greer's residence.
