According to the city directory in 1900, Spencer M Janney was in the company O S Janney & Co., and he was alos the President of Huntingdon & Broad Top Mountain Railroad & Coal Co.

O S Janney & Co. is one of the oldest firm in this city dealing indigo dyestuffs, aniline, chemicals, etc. Huntingdon & Broad Top Mountain RR & Coal Co. was a short line railroad company operating passenger and freight service on standard gauge track in south central Pennsylvania. In the city directory, both Spencer M Janney and Morris A Janney (Spencer's son) were mentioned as the co-partners of O S Janney & Co.

In fact, Spencer M Janney died in October 1899 at the age of 62, according to the city's Death Certificate Index. In 1908, his son, Morris Allison Janney, who also  works for O S Janney & Co., died at the age of 40. the death news of Morris, which was included in the records of American Textile Industries, also mentioned the Janney family residence as at Summit and Prospect avs., Chestnut Hill.

Janney's residence still stands at its original site today, and the exterior of the house looks pretty much the same as it was more than 100 years ago.
