Philadelphia UniversityPaley Design Center Philadelphia University's renowned Paley Design Center collects and cares for many original examples of international textiles. The University, formerly the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, houses a large collection of African textiles, textiles, tools and other related objects, bequested upon the University by various donors. The University held an exhibition of its African textile collection in 1995 curated by Ndidi U. Amachi, which also featured items lent from various Philadelphia area collections. The collection at Philadelphia University is unique because its focus on the form and function of textiles allowing insight into the creative process and its intersection with systems of belief, traditions, and customs. The textiles are from a diverse range of Africa that includes Kenya, Ethiopia, Zaire, South Africa, Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Morocco, and Uganda therefore exemplifying distinctions between many African cultures and allowing for comparative study. There are around 80 pieces within the collection.
