Decorative Arts

Bryn Mawr’s decorative arts collection includes furniture, textiles, metalwork, ceramics, and glass, which have been acquired over the decades primarily for the adornment of campus buildings. The core of this collection, sometimes referred to as the Heritage Collection, includes approximate 600 items from the Deanery, the campus residence of M. Carey Thomas, the first dean and second president of the college. From the 1880s until the mid 1920, Thomas and her companion Mary Garrett assembled a wide ranging collection of fine and decorative art objects from their travels in Europe and Asia. Some of the most important objects in the decorative arts collection include furniture, frames, and decorative building elements designed by artist Lockwood De Forest, who worked on architecture and design projects at the college from the 1890s to the 1910s.
