We are now in the middle of our 4th week of digging in Nemea.
We are excavating the entrance way and the chamber of the tomb this week.
The entrance looks like it will be about 12 feet long, but we are not so sure about the size of the chamber itself. The entranceway is cut sharply into the rock, and in the soil we have found some painted pottery. Right now, the chamber part of the tomb has the shape of an oval. Yesterday, in the chamber, we found a kylix (a goblet) and also a jug.
With one tomb to dig, the rest of the group has been working on water sieving and pottery washing, as well as going on field trips to nearby sites. Today the students worked in a "field school" (where they practiced how to dig properly).
Next week, we will probably be working on a different job. The directors have invited a geologist to come and see if there any more tombs in the field above the one in which we are working. If there are, we might get to dig them next summer. Here is what the field looks like now:
