WEEK 8

We have come to the end of 8 weeks of excavation!

This last week we finished digging the entranceway of the tomb very carefully.  The wall of stones that they used to block the entranceway may have been made at least 4 different times.  Here is a video of what it is like to walk into the tomb.

The rest of the week has been spent in the Nemea Museum working on finishing up all the work. People have been taking photographs of artifacts, working on scanning and entering information into the computer, writing about the tomb, cleaning and repairing artifacts, and cleaning out the storeroom. I have been making maps.  We do not have to get up quite so early when we work at the Museum, so we have all been enjoying getting a little more sleep than usual.

It is amazing to think that we have spent 8 weeks together.  It is sad to leave Nemea, but I am looking forward to seeing my family and friends.  We are having a good-bye dinner tonight, and then people will begin to leave this weekend.  I fly to Boston on Sunday, and will be  home in Connecticut on Monday.

STOMION
Here is the blocking wall (stomion).  It is about 3 meters tall.  You might be able to see that it was built and rebuilt at least 4 different times.

STELLA WALKS FROM THE CHAMBER TO THE STOMION
The stomion has been taken down.  Stella is walking through the entranceway.

At the end of the season, a frontloader came and smoothed the surface of the field.  The chamber and the dromos were filled with dirt again, and all you can see is the outline of the tomb.
