Roman Syria

The final cultural region is Roman Syria to which objects in the Bull Collection have been attributed. Two pieces have been assigned by art dealers to this region and this time period without provenience, the glass beaded necklace G-110 and the bronze archer M-142. Glass beads, in general, are difficult to assign because their shapes and composition tend to be common to many cultures and many time periods. The male figurine has unusual features. The crown has no parallel in any culture examined for this collection and the bow is one that is known among Parthians, Scythians and the Romans and its use is known from the first century BCE until the third century CE. Needless to say this figure, too, is a mysterious piece which needs further study.
