Do IT : Email FAQ : Viewing Attachments

Select your e-mail client  * Eudora   * Pine/Elm   * WebMail

Eudora
To open an attachment in Eudora, simply double-click on the attachment icon/description in the e-mail message. The Operating System will start the associated application to display the attachment.

Sending an attachment
  • Create an e-mail message as you normally would
  • From the Message menu, select Attach File
  • In the dialog box that appears, select the document you would like to attach. Click the button marked Attach to return to the e-mail message
  • When you have finished the message, click Send

Pine/Elm
If you receive an attachment in Pine, you may not be able to read it. In order to read an attachment, or to send one, you will need to ftp the file from/to your UNIX account.

  • To view an attached document, type "v" (ViewAttch). Scroll down to the attachment. To read the file, press Return. To exit from the Viewer, type "e" (Exit).
  • To save the attachment as a file in your UNIX account, type" v". Scroll down to the attachment and type "s" (Save). You will be asked to acknowledge the saving of the file; press Return. If the file has been saved successfully, the message "Part #, # lines written to ‘home/ada/a#/userid /name of attachment" will be displayed.
Note: If you receive an error, it may be due to the fact that the attached file is too large to store in your account. Remember that each account has one (1) megabyte of space; this is enough to store a Word file, but probably not enough to store large graphics or sounds.
  • To send an attachment, ftp the file to your UNIX account. When sending a message in pine, type "Control-j" to get the "Attach file" prompt. Specify the filename and press Return. Send the message you normally would.
  • To verify that a file has been saved to your account, quit Pine. At the UNIX prompt, type ls. A list of files and directories in your account will appear. One of these should be your attachment.
  • Once you have used ftp to save the file to a disk, type "rm name of attachment". Confirm the deletion of the file by typing "y". You will be returned to the UNIX prompt, having deleted the file.
