Computing
Services will provide you a direct connection from your dorm room if
- you have the hardware and software needed to connect
to the network
- you agree to adhere to our network usage policies
Hardware and Software Requirements
Find out if your computer meets Bryn
Mawr networking specifications.
Dormitory Networking Policies
You must agree to
our policies before we will connect your computer.
- Software- Your
network connection will allow you to access e-mail, news, the Web, and the other
network services directly from your dorm room without using a modem.
- Convenience- You can access the network anytime
of the day or night. You will never get a busy signal. You will have
a direct
connection just like faculty and staff do in their offices and no need
to walk to the public computer labs or tie up your phone line.
- Speed- The fastest
dial-in modem connection is 56 kilobits per second. An ethernet connection
runs up to 10,000 kilobits per second-about 175 times faster than the
fastest dial-in connection. Thus, you will spend less time waiting for
your computer to send or receive data, and more time working with the
data. Residents of Glenmede, Batten, and Perry houses are provided
with DSL access.
- Availability- You
are not limited to the hours the public computing labs are open.
You won't tie up your phone line
while you're looking
up books in the library catalog. Nor will your dorm connection time
out, as dial-in connections can.
Please
note: Computing Services can not guarantee that every computer
will connect properly to our network, even if it seems to meet all the
criteria listed. Most Apple and IBM-compatible personal computers with
Windows can be connected to the network. However, purchasing some equipment
for your computer might be necessary.
Because software must be specially configured
for our network, you must use the networking software configuration
recommended by Computing
Services. We will neither take responsibility for, nor support,
software not provided by Bryn Mawr College Computing Services. Computing
Services assumes no liability for your hardware while working on your
equipment.
