Do IT : Email FAQ : Changing Passwords

There are multiple ways to change your email password.

  • If you ever forget your password, you can request that your password be reset to a new, randomly generated password. Passwords will be available at the Help Desk whenever Guild is open. YOu can recieve your reset passwords either in person with a form of photo ID or over the telephone with identification such as the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. The Help Desk can be reached at 610-526-7440.
  • If you know your current password (expired or not), you can use the web-based WebCAT account tools.
  • You can also change an unexpired password in a Secure Shell (SSH) session. This is easiest if you use pine or elm to check your email, or if you are having problems using WebCAT successfully.

NOTE: If you change your password using one of these methods, your new password will be in effect no matter which program you use to check your e-mail.

Please note that the following regulations apply to your selection of a new password:

  • It must be eight (8) characters long.
  • It must contain a mix of upper-case and lower-case characters.
  • It should not be a dictionary word in any language.
  • It should contain at least two alphabetical characters and one non-alphabetical character (a number or symbol).
  • It must differ from your old password by at least three characters.
  • It cannot be a circular shift of your username. (For example, if your e-mail address is "janedoe@brynmawr.edu", your password cannot be "doejane", "nedoeja", or any rotation of the letters in "janedoe".)
