MORE INFORMATION ON FALL COURSES:
* Level I courses, Hip-hop, Flamenco, and African are open to all levels of experience; levels II-III, Ballet Workshop, and Dance Ensembles presuppose prior dance training. Students may enroll for a course either or both quarters with the exception of Ballet I. You may just enroll for Ballet I, in the 1st quarter but you'll need the 1st quarter of that technique or equivalent experience to enroll in the 2nd quarter. IF YOU NEED MORE INFO ABOUT CLASS LEVELS OR IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT PROFESSOR HAVILAND In the DANCE OFFICE at 526-5208 or lcarusoh@brynmawr.edu
* Ballet Workshop will introduce excerpts from the classic and contemporary ballet repertory(on flat, not pointe). There will be 8 sessions starting 9/13 and continuing until late Novemenber). Students should be working at an intermediate leve or abovel and after the first session, if they decide to continue, must be willing to commit to a minimum of five additional class sessions.
*Ballet III - Twenty-five minutes of pointe work has been added to Ballet III on Wednesdays for those who attend the class regularly and who elect to take this portion of the class. Participation is at the discretion of the instructor.
*Dance Outreach—Students learn a lecture-dem format and a dance (fully costumed and musically scored) usually based on a narrative and tour the project to public schools, libraries, etc. in the greater Philadelphia area. Experience in some dance form plus an interest in performance are basic requirements for selection into the program. Please contact Professor Madeline Cantor if you are interested. mcantor@brynmawr.edu
* Ensembles are semester long courses. No materials are necessary for the auditions; they are run in a manner similar to class. Students are expected to be working at the intermediate level of dance technique.
* Level II and III classes and the ensembles may be taken for PE Credit OR Academic credit. We strongly recommend that first semester frosh enroll for PE credit. Contact the Dance office with any questions.

Fall 2007 Academic Courses:

Dance Composition I
(ARTD B 142)
TTH 2:30pm-4:00pm
David Brick

This is a course about making dances. It is open to anyone who likes to create and likes to move. It explores basic elements of dances including space, time, rhythm, energy, dynamics, qualities of movement and gesture, and both traditional and postmodern structures. Compositional theory will be approached through the experience and practice of making dance studies starting with simple solo phrases and moving towards more complex and interactive group forms and processes. While primarily a studio course students will be expected to begin to develop and broaden their understanding of dance as an art form and their abilities to see and critique dances. To this end, students will also be assigned readings.

Students taking DANCE COMP I are also required to take a minimum of one dance technique class per week.

Students wishing to MINOR or MAJOR in Dance or to CHOREOGRAPH for the Spring Concert should consider completing DANCE COMPOSITION I by Spring of their second year. Dance Comp I is required for the major or minor and student choreography for the Spring Concert is selected from work produced in the Advanced Choreography course which has Comp I and II as prerequisites.

Spring 2008 Academic Courses:

Dance Composition II
(ARTD 242) pre-requisite: ARTD 142, Composition I
TTH 2:30pm-4:00pm
Madeline Cantor
The goal of this course is to build on work accomplished in Composition I and to develop an understanding of and skill in the theory and craft of choreography. This includes:
-- deepening movement invention skills
-- exploring form and structure in dancemaking
--investigate sources for sound, principally music, but including text, language, and vocalizations as well
-- developing control of group design
-- broadening critical understanding
Students will work on fewer projects than in Comp I and will thus have more opportunities to revise and expand work.

Students taking DANCE COMP II are also required to take a minimum of one dance technique class per week.

Students wishing to MINOR or MAJOR in Dance or to CHOREOGRAPH for the Spring Concert should consider completing DANCE COMPOSITION II by Spring of their third year. Dance Comp II is a pre-requisite for Advanced Choreography, the course from which choreography for the Spring Concert is selected.
