Graduation Honors Graduation Honors

The A.B. degree may be conferred cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude. The following policies apply. Each year's commencement program includes a list of all students who have earned these honors.

Cum Laude

GPA: 3.400 - 3.599

Eligibility for cum laude is based on your GPA precisely as it appears on your Bryn Mawr transcript. This means:

  • Grades behind CR/NC are not included.
  • Summer school grades from Bryn Mawr earned on this campus are included, as are grades from Bryn Mawr-administered programs in Avignon and Pisa (and Florence through the summer of 2005).  No other summer grades are included.
  • Terms grades from Haverford, University of Pennsylvania, and Swarthmore are included.  Term-time grades transferred from other institutions are not included.

Magna Cum Laude

GPA: 3.600 and above, excluding the top ten students with GPAs of 3.800 or above. Eligibility for magna cum laude is based on a recalculated GPA that includes grades earned in courses that you have chosen to take CR/NC.

Summa Cum Laude

Limited to the top 10 students in the class with GPAs of 3.800 or higher.

As with magna cum laude , eligibility for summa cum laude is based on a recalculated GPA that includes grades earned in courses that you have chosen to take CR/NC. In recent years, the cutoff between summa and magna has tended to be closer to 3.9 than to 3.8.

In addition to College-wide honors, most departments may also award honors in the major. Each department sets its own criteria for these honors.
