The Udall Scholarship was instituted in 1992 to provide scholarship aid to undergraduate students from any ethnic group who demonstrate a commitment to improving or preserving the environment and to Native American undergraduates committed to a career in health care or tribal public policy. Bryn Mawr may nominate up to 6 candidates.
ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien or national. You must be a full-time sophomore or junior with at least a 3.0 general grade point average (most successful Udall candidates will have a higher GPA). Finally, you must be committed to a career related to the environment, OR committed to a career in tribal public policy or Native American health care (only Native Americans and Alaska Natives are eligible to apply in tribal public policy or Native American health care).
APPLICATION PROCEDURES: Students interested in being nominated should submit the following to the Dean’s Office by noon on Click Here for Deadline:
| • A current, comprehensive resumé, including employment, activities, and honors. This need not be limited to one page. |
| • A brief (1-page) statement of your professional aspirations. Be specific. |
| • A brief (1-page) description of one or more leadership or public service activities, as they relate to your Udall application. |
| • A brief (1-page) discussion of at least two different speeches, legislative acts, or public policy statements by Congressman Udall. (See the University of Arizona’s Morris Udall page for an archive of speeches) |
| • The names of 2 or 3 faculty members willing to write letters of recommendation for you. (At least one of these must be from your major department.) |

On the basis of this internal application, the Fellowships Adviser, in consultation with the fellowships committee, will name up to 6 nominees.
The external application, due to Dean Mancini by Click Here for Deadline, is downloadable online:
| • A 6-page application form. This asks you for short answers to several questions: for example, “describe one specific example of your leadership” and “describe a recent particularly satisfying public service activity.” |
| • An analysis (800 words or less) of a significant public speech, legislative act, or public policy statement by Congressman Udall. You must include a discussion of its effect on your interests and career goals. |
| • Three letters of recommendation, one of which may be a letter on nomination prepared by the Fellowships Adviser. |

AFTER THE APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED: In early April, the Udall Foundation
announces the names of Udall Scholars and Honorable Mentions.
