Major Advising Timetable

 

In the spring of the freshman year, students should:

  • Attend teas sponsored by the departments that interest them, to find out about specific majors.  These teas will take place during the four weeks that follow Spring Break.
  • talk with their deans about the majors that interest them.

In the sophomore year, students should:

  • attend conversations during Sophomore Week (late October / Early November) to talk about the issues to keep in mind when choosing a major.
  • attend major teas during the four weeks that follow fall break and the four weeks that follow spring break to find out information about specific majors.
  • meet with a major adviser to create a major plan (that is, “declare a major”)
    • in November (for students who plan to study abroad during the junior year at a non-approved program  or a year-long program,  in order to submit their study abroad applications in mid-December), or
    • in January or early February (for students who plan to study abroad during the junior year at an approved program , in order to submit their study abroad applications in mid-February), or
    • in March or early April (for students who plan to remain at Bryn Mawr for the junior year, in order to get their majors recorded before preregistration ends).   Majors declared after April preregistration closes are unlikely to be taken into consideration for lotteries.
  • or  propose an independent major
    • by the first Friday of the semester (for students who want to study abroad ), or
    • by the fourth Friday of the semester (for students who plan to remain at Bryn Mawr for their junior years.)
  • consult with their major advisers in person during preregistration and obtain signatures from their major advisers on their spring preregistration forms.

In the junior year, students should:

  • attend major teas during the four weeks that follow fall break and the four weeks that follow spring break to welcome prospective majors, talk with other majors, and get to know their departments.
  • attend other departmental functions, including lectures, symposia, dinners, lunches, etc.
  • consult with their major advisers as needed, but at a minimum at the following times:
    • in person, at preregistration time in the fall and spring, to obtain advice and a signature on their preregistration forms, and
    • in person, during the first week of each semester, to obtain signatures from their major advisers on their final registration form, if
      • they have dropped or added any courses in their major, or
      • they were away from the college during preregistration.
    • by email, when finalizing their courses while studying abroad.

In the senior year, students should:

    • attend major teas during the four weeks that follow fall break and the four weeks that follow spring break to welcome prospective majors, talk with other majors, and get to know their departments.
    • attend other departmental functions, including lectures, symposia, dinners, lunches, etc.
    • consult with their major advisers as need, but at a minimum:
      • in person, at preregistration time in the fall, to obtain advice and a signature on their preregistration forms, and
      • in person, during the first week of each semester, to obtain signatures from their major advisers on their final registration form, if
        • they have dropped or added any courses in their major, or
        • they were away from the college during preregistration.
