Link To Summer Internship & Research Grants Home Page
Our office is responsible for helping students obtain Bryn Mawr sponsored funding resources for summer internships, volunteer work, field work, directed research, institutional research or self-designed projects that will benefit a student's intellectuall, personal and/or professional development, in accord with the funder's wishes.
DO I NEED TO HAVE AN INTERNSHIP OFFER "IN-HAND"?
You do not need to have an offer "in-hand" before applying for funding.
However....
You do need to have identified and applied to, or be in the process of applying to, particular internship, volunteer, research or program positions.
For directed research, you need to have a research plan and sponsoring faculty member or other oversight.
For "self-designed" positions, you need to be working in partnership with or in association with (an) established organization(s).
The following funding sources support a particular internship, affiliated internship programs or a structured internship experience: BMC Summer of Service (Civic Engagement Office), Haverford Center for Peace and Global Citizenship, Department of Special Collections, Canaday Library (Marianne Hansen).
In the above cases, your application will be both for funding and for participation in a particular internship, affiliated program or internship experience. Please see the sponsoring Departments or Centers for information.
WHAT KIND OF FUNDING IS AVAILABLE?
You may apply to more than one funding source.
However...
You may receive funding from only one source. If you have a preferred funding source, rank your preference on the "Application Coversheet: Funding Sources for Which Applying."
An exception...
You may receive the Elizabeth Packard Art and Archaeology Fund ($600) or the Martha Barber Montgomery Prize ($600) in addition to full funding from another source.
In addition...
The following funding sources provide additional money for travel and/or living expenses: Black Alumnae Fund, Green Grants, Science Horizon Internships.
A caveat...
Funding, whether additional or primary, is not provided for program fees beyond those for travel or housing costs.
WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF RECEIVING FUNDING?
Selection is based on the quality of the application as a whole.
Special attention is paid to whether the personal statement demonstrates a clear understanding of how the internship/research fits within the student's career plans, academic work and/or personal interests.
Preference is also given to .
However...
In the case of equally qualified applications, preference is given to upperclass students.
Finally...
Every student has a strong chance of being funded at least once, but a slim chance of being funded more than once.
Possible exceptions...
Alumnae Regional Scholars and Projects for Peace grantees are eligible for other funding sources.
Students may receive funding for research one summer and funding for an internship another summer.
We know the time of notification from the various internship sponsors varies. If you are awarded funding, you will need to have a Letter of Invitation from the internship sponsor sent to the Dean's Office as soon as possible in order to receive funding disbursements. If you are not successful in securing an internship placement, you must withdraw from consideration for funding immediately.
