Summer Grant Opportunities

Each year Bryn Mawr provides funding for over 100 students to undertake summer internships and research, both on and off-campus. A variety of offices and departments administer these summer grants. This searchable database provides a central location for you to learn about the various opportunities available. You can do a custom search, or view the complete list below.

Please note that many of these listings are for funding only. In these cases, students will be expected to secure their own internships. The Bi-College Career Development Office offers a wide variety of resources to help students find internships, including many supported by outside funding.

For your convenience, Dean Erika Behrend has put together a list of essential information and frequently asked questions that will help you get started. Both the essential information and frequently asked question links are extremely important to review. If you have further questions, please call x5375 to schedule an appointment with her. (Dean Behrend is available in the office on Tuesdays).

Industry/Special Interest: Academic Research

Description: The Andrew J. Mellon Foundation has given Bryn Mawr College a grant in honor of Hanna Holborn Gray, '50 who served as Chair of the foundation's Board of Trustees. The College will use the funds to support undergraduate research in the humanities and the humanistic social sciences. The students chosen to participate in the program will have the opportunity to spend the summer of 2008 conducting funded research. Fifteen students will be supported each year. We expect to support students with grants of $3600 while they do research that can either be the beginning of the senior thesis or a project that stands alone, but is relevant to their intellectual interests.

Award Amount: $3600

Number of Awards: 15

Eligibility: Rising seniors ('09) and juniors ('10) with GPA’s of 3.3 or greater are eligible to apply. Students should plan to spend eight to ten weeks this coming summer on their research. It is expected the work will be done on campus. Scholars may work elsewhere if the project is best conducted in another location. There will be a two-day workshop in the early summer for all the recipients on the demands of long-term research. Weekly meetings to discuss work in progress will be held for all those working on campus. All fellows will be expected to have a faculty research advisor but this person need not be available during the summer.

Students spending the entire year or the second semester of their Junior year abroad or away should consult with Erika Behrend in the Dean's Office to discuss the application procedure. A student’s overall academic record will be an important consideration in the selection process.

A strong application will be one that includes an original and realistic proposal for research. Applicants who are on campus in the spring semester may be interviewed by the selection committee and the committee will make the final selection.

The $3600 stipend is intended to cover room and board (subsidized housing will be available on campus) and to leave you with money to contribute to your term-time expenses. If you anticipate additional expenses related to your research for travel, materials, etc., please see Dean Behrend.

How to Apply: Interested students should notify their departments of their intentions to apply by January 23 and should seek out faculty members who agree to supervise their research. Students needing assistance in choosing appropriate research supervisors should consult with departmental chairs or deans. Haverford or Swarthmore faculty members may be chosen as supervisors.

4) Written permission to release your transcript to the selection committee.

5) Two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a research advisor with whom you have discussed the proposal. A second letter should be from a faculty member who knows your work.
