Academic Program

The Bryn Mawr/Haverford Education Program offers several options to students interested in education or teaching. Education courses include both extensive exploration of educational theory and field placement opportunities, which range from two hours per week in the introductory course to full-time student teaching in the culminating course required for certification. There are currently over 100 students enrolled in one of the program's formal options, and many more who take courses independently.

Bryn Mawr and Haverford students may:

• Explore one or more aspects of education in areas of particular interest - such as urban schooling - by enrolling in single courses;
• Pursue a Minor in Educational Studies;
• Pursue a Minor in Educational Studies leading to secondary teacher certification;
• Complete the secondary teacher certification program in a fifth year program after they graduate;
• Complete elementary certification through Swarthmore and Eastern Colleges (at additional cost and with summer coursework);
• Submatriculate (as juniors or seniors) into Penn’s Graduate School of Education’s elementary or secondary education Master’s Program.
• In a five-year program, complete both the A.B./M.A. program in physics or mathematics (or possibly other departments that offer the AB/MA option) and the secondary teaching certification program.

Students interested in any of these options are invited to come to an orientation on either campus to learn more. These sessions are held in October and March on both campuses and are announced to all first year students and sophomores through e-mail and campus postings.
