Application for Certification

To apply for PA certification, students complete an on-line “New Credential Application” for an “Instructional I” certificate in their certification area (e.g., English, 7-12) using the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Teacher Information Management System (TIMS). The certification application fee, which students are responsible for paying by credit card on-line or by money order by mail, is $125.00.

How to access TIMS:

  • Register for a Log In: Go to Under "I WOULD LIKE TO," click on "Access my PDE applications." Under "Log In," select "Register," then complete the registration instructions.
  • Once registered, log in. At the bottom under "My PDE applications," select "TIMS," then press "Go."

On the "Home" page, select "complete a new credential application" for an "Instructional I" certificate in your subject area (e.g., Mathematics, 7-12). Haverford students: even though our program is bi-college, you will need to state that you completed a teacher preparation program at Bryn Mawr College.

How to calculate your GPA for the application:

  • Undergraduates: Use your cumulative GPA on your final transcript.
  • Post-baccalaureate students:
  1. Bryn Mawr College graduates: Use your cumulative GPA on your final transcript (it factors in your undergraduate and post-bacc course grades).
  2. Haverford College graduates and Bryn Mawr graduate students: (Undergraduate GPA x # of courses) + (Bryn Mawr College GPA x # of courses) / (UG + Bryn Mawr course units) = Certification Program GPA

Reporting SAT/ACT Scores (in lieu of PAPA test scores) [Undergraduates only]
If at the time of matriculation at Bryn Mawr or Haverford, you received a score on the SAT of no less than 1550 with no individual section (Critical Reading, Writing, Mathematics) score of less than 500 OR you received a composite score of 23 on the American College Test (ACT) Plus Writing test accompanied by a combined English/Writing score of 22 and a Math score of 21, you may use the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) Plus Writing to meet the basic skills examination requirement may (in lieu of the PAPA test series).

You may combine section scores from different tests but may use the best score earned from one test administration.

You may use only the satisfactory scores achieved prior to matriculation in the college/university/approved program provider (i.e., while still in high school).

There are two acceptable methods for reporting SAT/ACT scores to the Division of Certification Services:

  • You may submit SAT/ACT scores directly to the Division of Certification Services. The score report must arrive in an unopened envelope from the test vendor and be submitted with the TIMS application coversheet. The company will not send the scores directly to PDE. PDE cannot accept opened copies.
  • Arrange to send Ann Brown an official score report. She can then submit your SAT/ACT scores through TIMS. Ann will verify the scores in TIMS by entering all three scores plus the composite score in the notes section of the affirmation and recommendation section in TIMS.

Ann Brown will go in to TIMS to approve applications as soon as students' final grades are in. Applicants should receive their Instructional I certificate in four-six weeks from the time that the State receives all required information.

Students seeking certification in states other than Pennsylvania should contact the appropriate State Department of Education for information on requirements for applying as out-of-state residents to transfer their Pennsylvania certification.
