Pennsylvania's Act 48 of 1999:

Continuing Professional Education for K-12 Educators

Act 48 of 1999 requires people who hold Pennsylvania professional educator certification to complete continuing education requirements every five years to maintain their certificates. Educators must receive six collegiate credits (a Bryn Mawr credit is equal to four collegiate credits) or participate in 180 continuing education hours (or a combination of the above) every five years.

Bryn Mawr College is an Act 48 provider. If you are a certified educator and seek to have your Bryn Mawr coursework count towards Act 48, please contact Ann Brown in the Bryn Mawr/Haverford Education Program at (610) 526-5376.

Bryn Mawr faculty or staff members who would like to offer Act 48 hours for workshops they provide that are open to K-12 educators can contact Ann Brown for information about the steps involved in applying to have the workshop count.

Bryn Mawr College Summer Institutes for K-12 Teachers

Please note: Information about the Summer 2008 institutes will be posted in the Spring of 2008.

A series of summer institutes that bring together college faculty and precollege teachers. Institutes meet five days a week from 9 am to 4 pm at at Bryn Mawr College or Haverford College. Bryn Mawr and Haverford faculty and K-12 educators share perspectives on how to enhance science and mathematics education throughout the curriculum and at all levels of the educational enterprise. Among the major themes of the Institutes are:

Institute participants receive a stipend and development grant to implement and report on curriculum changes resulting from the Institute experience. Certified teachers receive Act 48 hours as well. Interested teachers may apply to one or more Institutes. Additional information about particular institutes is available from the links on the above web site.

Bryn Mawr's Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research also has continuing education courses.
