Alumni Profiles

The graduates listed here volunteered to be resources for current and prospective students making their way through or interested in the Education Program. Some completed state certification to teach at the secondary level, some completed the minor in Educational Studies, and all are teaching or working in education-related settings. You can contact those whose interests and goals correspond with yours and ask them questions about the Education Program and career paths.

Teaching Secondary School (Grades 7-12)

Paul Burgmayer (BMC post-bac, 2003) is teaching math and science at Great Valley High School, a public school in Phoenixville, PA. He also directs Bryn Mawr's summer Science for College program for high school young women.

Esther Yoon Mi Cho graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 2006 with a degree in English and a secondary certification to teach English. She currently works at Northern Valley Regional High School (Demarest) in northern New Jersey. She teaches British/English literature to four classes of juniors and American literature to a class of sophomores. She also helps advise the school's debate team.

Liz Crane graduated from Haverford College in 1997 with a degree in biology and secondary certification in biology. She is currently a biology teacher at Brookline High School in Brookline, Massachusetts. Before working at BHS, Liz earned an MEd from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, taught biology at the Fieldston School in New York City, and worked for a year at the International School of Stavanger, Norway, as a science teaching intern.

Emily Dolci (HC 2005, Anthropology major, teacher certification in secondary social science) writes, "I am teaching civics, geography and U.S. history at Windham High School, a large (for Maine standards!), mostly rural district outside of Portland. As with any work with kids, I am thriving on the energy they bring and finding ways to design curriculum that gets them thinking outside their largely-isolated worlds. I am particularly thankful that I have found a school that gives me autonomy and support to be creative in this regard. I am also an advisor to the Outing Club and am trying to find ways to integrate my wilderness experience more thoroughly into the curriculum." [May 2007]

Nicole Greaves completed the 5th year teacher certification program in secondary English in May 2006. She is now teaching English at The Crefeld School in Philadelphia. [Fall 2007]

Grace Kang (BMC 2006, Spanish major, Spanish teaching certification) is teaching Spanish at Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan, NJ. She teaches two sections of Spanish 1, two sections of Spanish 2, and one section of "Spanish for communication." [September 2006]

Candice Kilbride (Villanova 2005) completed the social science certification program at Bryn Mawr/Haverford in the spring of 2005, then enrolled in Villanova's graduate education program and received a Master's degree in Teacher Education while she substitute taught at various schools in the area. Starting in September 2006, Candice began teaching English and social studies at Upper Merion High School [September 2006].

Aubrey Levy graduated from Bryn Mawr in 2002 with 7-12 Certification in English. She is a high school English teacher with the Central Bucks School District in Doylestown, PA.

Brig Lampert graduated from Haverford College in 1998 with a degree in English and secondary certification to teach English. He teaches English at Jamestown High School in Williamsburg, VA.

Molly McTague graduated from Bryn Mawr in 2007 with a degree and a secondary teacher certification in English. She is teaching English at the Martin Luther King High School in New York, NY. [Fall 2007]

Patsy Mireles graduated from Haverford in 2006 with a major in history and a minor in education. She teaches Spanish at High Tech High Bayshore (Redwood City, California). [Fall 2007]

Shelley Nash graduated from Bryn Mawr in 2007 with a major in history and a teacher certification in social studies. She teaches 7th and 8th grade social studies at the Richard Allen Preparatory High School in Philadelphia. [January 2008]

Kaitlyn Peterson (Haverford College, 2007, mathematics major and education minor) is teaching math at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, CA. She graduated from the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) in June 2008 with a teaching credential in secondary math and a Master of Arts degree in Education. [Fall 2008]

Leslie Pratt graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1996 with a degree in English and secondary certification in English. She teaches English at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, PA.

Stephanie Rexer (Haverford College, 2004, B.A. and secondary teacher certification, mathematics) is a math teacher at Long Beach High School in Lido Beach, NY.

Amy Seligman graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 2005 with a degree in mathematics and a secondary certification to teach math. She is a math teacher at George W. Hewlett High School in Hewlett, New York. [October 2007]

Teaching Elementary School (Grades K-8)

Catherine Carbonaro (HC 2006, elementary education certification through Swarthmore/Eastern Colleges) received the William Penn Fellowship to teach at the Chigwell School in Essex, England. She's a junior school tutor (equivalent of an elementary school teacher) and also teaches high school level American politics. Catherine writes that she is also coaching a few sports teams, doing boarding duties, and teaching a few other specific interest classes. [September 2006]

Justine Garcia (HC 2006, fine arts major and education minor) is a permanent substitute and theater arts teacher at the Morristown-Beard School in Morristown NJ. [September 2006]

Malorie Garret (BMC, 2007) is a first grade teaching associate at the National Presbyterian School in Washington, DC. [Fall 2007]

Mary Kubalanza (BMC, 2007) is a Grade K Teaching Associate at Wilmington Friends School in Delaware. [Fall 2007]

Jason Polykoff (HC 2006, psychology major and education minor) writes, "I am presently working at Friends' Central School in Wynnewood, PA. I am a 7th and 8th Grade Math Teacher (Algebra), Sports Informaition Director, Assistant Varsity Girls Soccer Coach, and Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach & Head JV Boys Basketball Coach." Ann Savage (BMC 2005) Annie is living in Washington, DC with another education minor, Karen Clement. She's working two jobs: as a teacher's assistant in a toddler classroom at Aidan Montessori school in the morning; and as an assistant in the after-school program at Sidwell Friends Lower School in the afternoon. Annie writes, "So far the kids have all been terrific and I've really been blessed with the staffs at both school, who are amazingly experienced, dedicated, talented, and welcoming…" [September 2005]

School Administrator

Ben Daley graduated from Haverford College in 1995 with a degree in physics and a teaching credential in physics and math. After teaching math and physics at a number of high schools, he became the principal of High Tech High, a charter high school in San Diego, CA. [February 2007]

In Graduate School

Nina Box (Bryn Mawr, 2003) writes: "After an exciting yet challenging year of teaching at a Korean High School as a Fulbright grantee, I am returning to the States to continue my education. I have been accepted to Columbia Teachers College in New York, where I am enrolled in a one year Masters Program. I will work towards a Masters of Arts in English Education. I have had the honor of being selected as one of ten Petrie Fellows, a new fellowship program through Teachers College and the Petrie foundation. In return for a five year commitment to teaching in New York City, the fellowship provides a stipend. It is an incredible opportunity, and I look forward to taking up the challenge!"

Julien Colvin (HC 2005) in enrolled in a mathematics Ph.D. program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He writes that as part of the Ph.D. program, he is minoring in education. He's also leaving open the possibility of doing his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education. Julien is also currently a teaching assistant in two sections of calculus. [September 2005]

Julia de la Torre graduated from Haverford College in 1998, having completed a major in French and certification in French. She has since taught at Kent Denver School in Oregon and in Moldova (through the Peace Corp), and she is returning to pursue further graduate work at Harvard's Graduate School of Education.

Lauren Doughty (Bryn Mawr College, 2007, history major, teacher certification in social studies) is enrolled in a graduate program in library science at the University of Pittsburgh.

Sarah Hyonsuk Jang, who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 2005 then received a secondary teacher certification in mathematics in 2007, is enrolled in the MA Math Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Janet Rhi (Bryn Mawr College, 2007, anthropology major, education minor) is enrolled in the M.A. in TESOL program at Teachers College, Columbia University. She will also receive a New York State teaching certification for TESOL for teaching grades 7-12. [Fall 2007]

Katie Rutledge (BMC 2005) is enrolled at Teacher's College, Columbia University, studying towards a Master's in Elementary Education and hopefully certification in grades 1-6. [September 2005]

Involved in School Start-Ups

Matthew Wildman graduated from Haverford College in 1998, having completed a major in history and certification in social studies, has taught in the New York City public schools since his graduation, and is about to start up a charter school in New York City.

Education-related Non-Profit Organizations and Foundations

Karen Clement, who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 2005 with a major in political science and a minor in education, is a research assistant in the Education and Human Development Division at the American Institutes for Research in Washington, DC, a large client-based research firm. [September 2005]

Jonathan Holmes (HC 2003) is Executive Director of Children Can Shape the Future (childrencanshapethefuture.org), a philanthropic organization that promotes community-building programs in the local Camden and Philadelphia areas.

Jennifer Ing, who graduated from Haverford College in 2006 with a major in psychology and a minor in education, spent the summer of 2006 working as a mental health therapist at the Center for Autism in Philadelphia, implementing behavioral- and relationship-based approaches in early intervention classrooms for autistic children in order to increase social and communication skills among the children. In September 2006, Jen began working as a research specialist in the Princeton University Psychology Department in Princeton, NJ. She is working in a social psychology laboratory on different research projects that span various topics, such as how people react to group norm violations, how important decisions are made (specifically peoples' decisions to drop out of college).

Katy Gentry (HC 2005) is living in Haverford House in West Philadelphia and working at the Village of Arts and Humanities in North Philadelphia, where she did her senior year field placement for Education 310/311. She is working in the education department helping organize the after-school arts program for teens as well as other special events that are education-related. Katy is also doing projects with Haverford, including a mural arts tour for Haverford students and a classical music concert series program in Center City for Haverford students. [September 2005]

Lindsey Giblin (BMC 2006, sociology major and education minor) writes, "I didn't go very far - I'm working as a Development Associate/Grantwriter for Project H.O.M.E., a non-profit in Philadelphia that addresses homelessness and poverty in the Diamond St. area of North Philadelphia. My job isn't explicitly education-related, but there are a lot of educational services (for adults and kids- GED, afterschool...) available for clients here." [September 2006]

Teaching at a Boarding School

Naomi Terbetski graduated from Bryn Mawr in 2005 with a bachelor's degree and a teacher certification in French. She is teaching French, chorus, and physical education fitness and conditioning at Oldfields School in Glencoe, MD, a boarding school for girls. She is also a dormparent. [September 2005]

Teaching Abroad

Brandon Clarke, who graduated from Haverford in 2005 with a major in history and minor in educational studies, is now enrolled in the Bryn Mawr/Haverford 5th year teacher certification program in secondary social studies. In the summer of 2007, he returned to the United States after two years of teaching English as a foreign language to 4th and 5th graders (as well as some older students) in Shenzhen, China (the mainland city bordering Hong Kong). Working for a College/University

Darla Attardi (BMC 2006, English major, English teacher certification) works at Bryn Mawr College as the Coordinator of Staff Education. She assesses the learning needs of staff members at the college and creates learning groups, classes, and other programs to meet those needs. Darla is also a teaching assistant in Bryn Mawr's summer Writing for College program for high school young women.
