Since 2004, the Haverford College Dean's Office, Philadelphia Futures and the Bryn Mawr/Haverford Education program have collaborated to develop an academically focused summer program at Haverford College for Philadelphia high school students. The content of the program has varied from summer to summer, but the central focus on the development of research, writing, and presentation skills remains the same each summer.
This past summer (July 2007), students engaged in exploring the power of questioning the 'status quo' through history, literature and the fine arts. Thirty-five rising 11th grade Philadelphia Futures Sponsor-A-Scholar students worked closely with Bryn Mawr and Haverford College students in this four-week program.
Heather Curl (HC '03), as lead teacher, developed the curriculum with support from Alison Cook-Sather, Associate Professor of Education. Three Teaching Assistants - Steven Ramirez (HC '09), Tiffany Shumate (BM'08) and David Bamat (HC '09) - worked alongside the lead teacher to provide content as well as mentorship for the participating students. Administrative support was provided by Haverford's Dean, Raisa Williams, who is the liaison with Philadelphia Futures Sponsor-A-Scholar staff. Information and position openings for next summer's program coming soon.
