History of the Program
The Empowering Learners Partnership (ELP) Program is the work of many, including Jerry Berenson (Chief Administrative Officer), Elliott Shore (Chief Information Officer), and Alison Cook-Sather (Director of the Education Program), who have supported the inception and development of the program; Alice Lesnick, Amanda Root, and the other members of the Education course "Empowering Learners: Theory and Practice of Extra-Classroom" who collaborated with campus stakeholders from across the College to conduct background research, create a mission statement, launch and begin to document the pilot program; and the first partners themselves, staff members and students who took up the opportunity to share teaching and learning with imagination and commitment.
This summer, Alice Lesnick and Amanda Root continued to build the ELP and EW3 programs. They shared in conversation with program participants and stakeholders to gain information and multiple perspectives on the work so far; formed an Advisory Board of variously positioned stakeolders; developed a strategic plan for the first year of the programs, post-pilot stage; created project infrastructure, including application and registration processes, participant database, and informational and outreach literature; completed a proposal to the Institutional Research Board to launch an action research project accompanying the programs; revised the Empowering Learners course in light of the emergence of the new programs; created a Praxis III course to engage the student coordinator role as a site of intellectual inquiry into leadership and empowerment through education; and led presentations for all members of Housekeeping and Dining Services Departments to re-introduce the program opportunities and invite participation.
