Blackboard buys WebCT
For those of you who haven't heard, Blackboard just bought WebCT. For a couple of good articles about the merger, see Inside Higher Ed and The Chronicle of Higher Ed.
I'm not sure what this means. In general, I'm skeptical of big deals like this, especially ones that basically eliminate any competition. It might mean there's no incentive for innovation. And it might mean that the price goes up significantly. It could also mean they decide they're big enough to try new things. But it's not been my experience that huge companies try new things.

I am sure that you have heard of the alternatives to both of these products called Moodle and though I haven't tried to install it myself, I am sure that it is only a little harder than installing the MediaWiki software that you are using for your Blackboard Wiki, which by the way is a great idea and I am going to be talking to my own supervisor tomorrow to showcase what you have done as well as tell him I want to do this. I am a Instructional Technology Specialist for a group of school districts in Upstate New York . I thought of doing this a few months ago and was testing it out myself until I crashed my server. I really am glad to see that you have something like this out there! One thing that I am also tempted to try is to have a younger cousin of mine create a page for teaching Flash MX, since I haven't had the time to learn it and I know that he wants to I thought that it would be the perfect opportunity to do both. Sorry for the rambling keep up the good work!
Tadge, thanks for the comment. We actually do have an installation of Moodle up. Our Language Learning Center director rolled it out for some of the language faculty who were unhappy with Blackboard. We just haven't advertised it to the larger population yet.
I know just enough flash to get myself into trouble. Mostly, my students do flash development for me. They're really good.
