TGIF Workshops Fall Semester 2004

All workshops begin at 1:00. Supported work time for selected sessions begins at 2:00 and lasts until 2:30.

September 10: Open House in ETC (ETC Office, Guild basement)

Join us to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Educational Technology Center, a place where faculty, staff and students can come to discuss, try out, and learn about technology for their classes and work life. The office is the home of Laura Blankenship, Sr. Instructional Technologist, Mike Zarro, College Web Developer, and part-time, of Ben Johnston, Language Learning Center Director. Refreshments will be served.

September 17: Computer Protection (Guild Lounge)

Come learn how to protect yourself from spam, spyware, adware and viruses. We’ll cover some best practices to prevent being inundated by these insidious

September 24: Alternatives to Dreamweaver for Web Design (Guild Lounge and Lab for supported work time)

Dreamweaver has increasingly become a tool for web develoment experts, leaving the average user floundering for a tool to create simple pages. Not to worry, there are several other options without having to learn html. October 1: Communicating in the 21st Century (Guild Lounge; Lab for supported work time)

RSS, IM, Wiki, Blog—sound like you’re in a sci-fi movie or have fallen into an acronym soup? Not at all. These are all ways to commicate via the internet. Want to get in touch with your students? Try IM-ing them. Want to get the latest news from multiple sources? Learn how to gather RSS feeds. Want to creat your own news? You might use a Wiki or a Blog. October 22: Video Editing (New Media Lab, Guild)

November 5: InDesign (Canaday Training Classroom)

InDesign is a powerful page layout program that allows to create brochures, posters, and other print-related products. Learn how to use this program and much more about the print world from Tracy Youells, from Public Affairs. She’ll show you some best practices for taking digital product and going to print using InDesign.

With use of the system increasing, we’d like to open up a discussion about how it might be better utilized as a pedagogical tool rather than just an administrative tool.
