Creating chapters

Before leaving iMovie entirely, you might want to create chapters which will then transfer over to iDVD and allow you to select certains scenes exactly the way you would on a commercial DVD.

1. To create chapters, first click the iDVD icon.

2.     Move the scrubber (the downward-facing triangle) at the spot where you want a chapter to begin.

3.     Click the Add Chapter button.

4.     You may name your chapter by typing into the chapter name box. The default is a time-stamp.

Creating the DVD

Your movie is edited. You have chapters marked. Now you’re ready to create your DVD.

  1. Click the Create iDVD project button.
  2. A message will appear letting you know that iDVD is launching. Often you will also be asked to save your project.
  3. iMovie remains open, but iDVD comes to the foreground.
  4. The menu for your DVD is the first thing displayed. You will probably want to change the design.
  5. To do so, click on the customize button.
  6. Choose a theme from the themes folder.
  7. Some themes allow you to drag movies or photoes to use as background.
  8. Titles can be changed by clicking once on the title area and typing the new title.
  9. Once you have the background and titles set, you should wait for the movie to encode before burning the DVD.
  10. To check on the encoding status, click on the status button.
  11. You will see the assets in the movie (usually just a .mov file) and next to it a blue status bar. When the bar reaches the end, it’s safe to burn.
  12. To burn the dvd, click the burn button to open the nuclear button, then click the nuclear button to begin burning. You must use DVD-R’s in iDVD.
  13. Encoding and burning take a long time, usually 2-3 times the length of the movie, so be patient.
