New Media Lab Final Cut Station (2nd from the wall)
Importing clips
- Launch iMovie (the clapboard icon in the dock)
- If another project comes up, go to File-->New Project. You will
be asked to name the project and
save
it in a particular location.
- Make
sure the tape unit (JVC) is set to L-1. To set the channel, push in the
knob on the right side and turn. The channel will show up on the display.
- You may want to turn on the tv to monitor your import.
- Set the selector to import (camera icon).

- When you're ready to import, click the import button under the preview
screen. It's usually a good idea to click this first and then begin playing
your tape or dvd. You can always trim off any excess.
- When
you have finished importing your clip, click the import button again.
- You will now have a clip in the clips pane.
Editing c
lips
- To
edit clips, you first should bring them down to the timeline/storyboard.
- To edit, click and drag below the preview screen to get markers for editing.
Dragging one lower triangle further from the other will create a yellow
area that you can either cut or crop.
- Cutting eliminates the yellow area while cropping keeps the yellow area
and eliminates everything else. To edit, go to Edit-->Cut (or Crop).
Exporting clips
- To export your movie for viewing outside of iMovie, you need to decide
what format you'd like to present it in and what kind of equipment you
will have during the viewing.
- If you want to export your movie to DVD, simply click the iDVD icon below
the clips pane. This will launch iDVD and allow you to create menus and
burn a DVD. (For more about using iDVD, click here).
- If you want to export your movie to a CD or to import into PowerPoint,
you will export a QuickTime file.
- Go to File-->Share.
- Choose QuickTime. You will then be given several options. From the dropdown
menu, choose the format you wish. (CD-ROM is a good choice for a medium-sized
frame clip).
- After a couple of minutes, you'll have a QuickTime file (ending in .mov)
that you can then burn to CD, import into PowerPoint or put on the web.
Want to print this out? Go to File-->Print and the document will be automatically formatted for printing!
