There are two Screenplay machines around camus--two in the New Media Lab and one in the library.

Getting started:
1) Turn on Screenplay unit (on/off switch on the back of the machine).
2) Verify that the external hard drive -blue box on top of the screenplay unit- is also on (the switch is a transparent button on the front).
3) Turn on TV monitors and Switcher. Make sure the Switcher has Screenplay as video input (number 3).
4) Enter your username and password OR, if you are a new user, click on New User and create a name and password of your own.


Create a clips drawer:
1) Right click the mouse on the “CLIPS” tab and select “NEW DRAWER”.
2) Name your “CLIPS DRAWER” by right clicking on the drawer and selecting “DETAILS”. Substitute the text “CLIPS DRAWER” with the name of your choice.
3) Double click on your drawer to open.


Create a Storyboard:
1) Click on the Storyboard tab (lower tab under the Clips Drawer on the left side of the screen).
2) Select an empty storyboard OR right click and select “NEW STORYBOARD”.
3) Rename the storyboard by right clicking on the storyboard tab, and selecting “DETAILS”.


To Record VHS Clips:
1) Turn on the VCR
2) Insert the VHS tape
3) Make sure switcher is on VCR
4) Small TV monitor must be on V1-Screenplay
5) Click the Screenplay RECORD button (red circle) to bring up the recording screen. Recording will not start automatically.
6) Cue the video up to just before the sequence you would like to record.
7) Press the RECORD button (red dot). “REC” will flash.
8) You will see the recording time in RECORD DURATION. For editing purposes, give yourself from 5 to 10 seconds at the beginning and end of each clip you wish to record.
9) Press STOP to end recording.
10) Record as many clips as you need following the same steps.
11) Don’t forget to name them using the DETAILS tab.
12) When you are finished recording, return to the editing screen by clicking the button with the clapboard on it.


To create a sequence of clips:
1) Drag your clips with the mouse from your open drawer down to the storyboard, and arrange in the desired sequence.
2) To edit a clip, highlight the clip and click the DETAILS tab
- Rename your clip if desired
- Set IN and OUT point by dragging the cursor and clicking the IN and OUT buttons.
3) Click on the STORYBOARD tab to return to your storyboard and edit more clips.
4) To play a sequence of clips on the storyboard, highlight the first clip and click the PLAY button.
5) To delete clips off your storyboard, drag and drop onto the screen area, or right click and select delete.


To Output to VHS tape:
1) Insert a VHS tape into the VCR. Make sure VCR is set to A1 (if not, press channel button on VCR until A1 is selected).
2) Press Screenplay on switcher.
3) Highlight the clip so the cursor is at the beginning of your sequence
4) To Record:
- Press the MASTER button on the keyboard.
- Press RECORD on the VCR. Press STOP on VCR as soon as your sequence ends.
5) To review what you have taped, press VCR on switcher, rewind and play on VCR.


To Output to DVD-R:
1) Insert a DVD-R in the DVD Player/Burner.
2) Press Screenplay on switcher.
3) Highlight the clip so the cursor is at the beginning of your sequence.
4) To record:
- Press the master button on the keyboard.
- Press RECORD on the DVD burner. Press STOP as soon as the sequence is over.
5) To review what you have recorded, just go back to menu and select the scene you want to watch.
6) Once you are done adding all the clips to your DVD-R, go to menu and select FINALIZE. This will enable you to watch your DVD in any DVD player.


To finish
1) Press the SHUTDOWN button on the keyboard.
2) Turn off all the equipment
NOTE: If you wish to record your sequences to CD-R or CD-RW, we suggest that you use i-Movie instead of Screenplay.
