BACK TO STUDENTS
WHAT FILM CLASSES HAVE YOU TAKEN?
Lots. Silent film, History of Narrative Cinema, Russian Avant Garde Art, Advanced Film Theory, Advanced Video Production, Women and Independent Film Cultures, Coming of Age Cinema, Curating Film, Found Footage. I wish I could have taken more. I really tried to take an acting class at Haverford but sadly one of my graduation requirements prevented me from taking it.
HAVE YOU DONE ANY FILM-RELATED INTERNSHIPS OR SUMMER PROGRAMS?
I have done an externship at Parent Earth one winter break. I have also done some marketing videos for my one-year position as a Communications Associate at Zidisha Microfinance. Other than these, I haven’t had intensive film internship experiences since I worked in non-governmental and philanthropic consulting fields. Currently I am a freelance production/research assistant and videographer in the Philly area (which is awesome), till I move to New York in 2014.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO STUDY FILM? WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT FILM STUDIES?
I have always had an obsession with the way moving images extend, constrain and disturb our ideological frameworks and I really wanted to start off my film studies minor with Silent Film to learn the early underpinnings of cinema going and making. I then moved on to more focused studies of understanding and studying films. The great thing about Bryn Mawr’s film studies department is that is an immersive interdisciplinary branch and allows one to figure out the nuanced ways of looking and thinking about media.
DO YOU ATTEND ANY FILM-RELATED EVENTS ON CAMPUS? OFF-CAMPUS? ANY HIGHLIGHTS?
I would sometimes attend the weekly screenings but I would generally go to International House of Philadelphia, PHILAMOCA, AwesomeFest, and other outdoor screenings that would happen in the Philly area. I also like attending screenings at New York at the IFC center, Angelika Film center, Film Forum or Rooftop Film Series. I tend to attend screenings that have a multimedia or queer performance element to them.
ANY THOUGHTS ON WHETHER OR NOT YOUR FUTURE PLANS WILL INVOLVE FILM?
I am currently trying to build up my networks and enhance my technical/scriptwriting skills. I am planning on getting an MFA in writing and direction after a few years.
IS/WAS YOUR THESIS FILM-RELATED? WHAT IS IT ABOUT? PLEASE PROVIDE A TITLE IF YOU HAVE ONE.
Sadly it wasn’t. I was an Economics major so I did a fall thesis in that subject. I wish I could have written a film thesis though- it probably would have on Satyajit Ray’s depiction of South Asian women or something.
HAVE YOU MADE ANY FILMS OR VIDEOS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TELL US ABOUT? PLEASE GIVE A TITLE, DESCRIPTION, AND/OR LINK.
I have made a few films. Some of them are really weird or funny (as some people referred to it) and I have made some films that covered more serious topics such as closeted queerness and sexual harassment in South Asia. These include ‘Sacred Learning’ and ‘Eve’s Shame.’
ANYTHING YOU'D WANT TO SAY TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING TAKING A FILM STUDIES CLASS, OR CONSIDERING A MINOR OR INDEPENDENT MAJOR IN FILM STUDIES?
Take at least one or two courses. You will never regret it- trust me!
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?
There SHOULD be a major in Film Studies at some point in the future- at least that’s my hope.
