The second of three lectures in series called “Courtly Encounters: Translating Courtliness in Early Modern Eurasia,” “Courtliness, Conversion and Martyrdom” addresses the matter of conversion, dealing in particular with the relations between Muslims and Christians—in particular Catholics.
After looking at the well-known problem of courtly inter-religious debates (or munāzara), the bulk of the lecture will deal with narratives of conversion as well as failed conversion.
All three Flexner lectures will be illustrated with contemporary visual materials.
