As part of Bryn Mawr's year-long Class Dismissed project, the college's Diversity Leadership Group and Alumnae Association are co-sponsoring a first-year student common reading assignment, Class Matters. Written by correspondents and journalists of The New York Times, Class Matters originally appeared in the Times in 2005 as a series of articles and essays that addressed the ways in which socioeconomic class affects the lives of people living and working in the United States. The book features interviews with Americans across the country, representing diverse ethnicities, educational backgrounds, occupations and political views, along with analyses of how class has manifested itself in different ways throughout U.S. history. We hope that faculty, staff, alumnae and parents will also read the book and participate in one (or more!) of a variety of programs and events addressing class that are planned for the year ahead.
Every residence hall at Bryn Mawr has its own Dorm Leadership team, which includes Hall Advisors (HAs), customs people, community diversity assistants (CDAs), and peer mentors. Together, the DLT provides support, advice, and friendly faces to new students as they adjust to community living and academics at Bryn Mawr. Hall Advisors are responsible for a small group of residents within a dorm, who usually live on the same hall or floor. They provide information about the college and its resources, help build a strong sense of community in the dorm, and plan various events and activities for residents throughout the year. Customs people are often sophomores and work in pairs on a particular hall. Together they are assigned to a small group of first-year students and serve as guides, resource people, role models, and friends to their frosh for the entire year. Community Diversity Assistants (CDAs) develop programming for residence halls that focus on issues of diversity and difference that help develop a strong, inclusive community on campus. Peer mentors offer dorm-based academic support for new students by helping with course planning and registration, effective time management, and improving study skills.
The Emily Balch Seminars (dubbed "ESems" for short) are named in honor of Emily Balch, Class of 1889, a gifted and pioneering scholar with a uniquely global perspective who advanced women's rights on an international level. In 1946, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. Taken by all first-year students in the fall semester, the Balch Seminars introduce the freshman class to a critical, probing, thoughtful approach to the world and our roles in it. The individual Balch Seminar course offerings vary from year to year, but are always taught by scholar-teachers of distinction within their fields and across academic disciplines. They facilitate the seminars as active discussions among students, not lectures. Through intensive reading and writing, the thought-provoking Balch Seminars challenge students to think about complex, wide-ranging issues from a variety of perspectives.
We're keeping our fingers crossed that it will be mild and dry on Wednesday, August 24, when the Class of 2015 arrives on campus for move-in! Students and their families can report to their assigned dorm starting at 8:30 a.m. where they will be greeted by hall advisors (HAs) and customs people who will guide new students to their rooms and help haul in all their belongings. The morning hours are also a good time for new students to get their photo ID (known as the OneCard) and room key from the Facilities Office in the Ward Building. At first glance, move-in day may look like chaotic, but it actually runs very smoothly – and the excitement is palpable, as new students meet hall mates, introduce family members, explore their dorms and set up their rooms. Lunch will be served to students and families at Erdman dining hall, and will be followed by President Jane McAuliffe's welcome assembly in Goodhart at 1:30 p.m. The Class of 2015's Customs Program officially kicks off in the late afternoon when the first-years bid farewell to departing parents and families and join their customs groups for dinner.
