Setting the Stage: With Bryn Mawr’s innovative 360ᵒ interdisciplinary experience, students engage in big-picture thinking by investigating a range of perspectives on a given topic. A cohort of students takes a cluster of classes over the course of a semester, focusing on the history, economic concerns, cultural intersections, and political impact of an era, decision, event, policy, or important scientific innovation. 360° participants hone their arguments and insights through writing and research, develop strategies for teamwork that push the limits of their talents and creativity, and work with professors and scholars to promote thinking for an interconnected world.

 

In the Classroom: This year, Exhibiting Modern Art comprises a sequence of classes over the course of the academic year that explore the differences in addressing academic and community audiences for art. In the fall, the History of Art course, taught by Steven Levine, studied the history of modern art from the Armory Show of 1913 to the present, through the lens of a significant collection of modern American art on loan to the College. In the spring, Brian Wallace’s Making an Exhibition course has shifted to the implementation of theory in the multidisciplinary practice of mounting and programming an exhibition of the collection in Canaday Library. 

 

Into the World: All 360°s include some kind of non-traditional classroom experience – travel, a Praxis placement, in-depth project work. The Exhibiting Modern Art 360ᵒ culminates in an exhibition of contemporary art that involves students in every aspect of the curating, planning, installing, and programming.
