General guidelines for the Spring 2007 GEOL 103 overnight field trip

Departure: The trip will be held on either Fri-Sat April 13-14th, or Fri-Sat April 20-21st. This will be announced the first week of classes in January. The bus departs PROMPTLY at 8:15AM on Friday morning.  Professor or lab coordinator will tell you where to meet the bus. We will plan to return by 6:30 PM on Saturday.

Dress: Be sure to bring warm layers of clothing (you can un-layer if you get too warm), raingear and shoes for walking in mud and/or rocky ground. Sandals or flipflops are a bad idea. Your shoes will probably get quite dirty, so don't wear shoes that you want to keep clean.

Food: Lunches for Friday and Saturday will be provided. You will need to provide or buy your own dinner for Friday night, and breakfast Saturday. There may be a continental breakfast at the motel Saturday morning.

Taking Notes: We will have a guide book for you with information about each stop. You will need to have something to write on and a writing implement.

Fossil-hunting at an active coal mine. Taking in the sights.

Students on the Spring 2001 Field Trip wrote many wonderful and amusing haiku to describe their experiences:

I am running late,
Of course the bus won’t leave me.
I watch it pull out.
Mary Rochelle

Geology me.
At the landfill I’m gone’ be
Planting a big tree.
Cambria Allen

The concrete bunkers
(Looking something like Erdman)
Hold nuclear waste.
Sabrina Balgamwalla

Coal mines and small towns
Show past struggles to live the
American Dream.
Amanda Rogers

O! Geology!
Knowledge from a ditch and stream.
Red rust still runs – why?
Emily Kahoe

Grave of ancient bog
disturbed. Birch, from its acid,
arise like bent bone.
Megan Paustian

6:30 am
not a fun time to get up
to go look at rocks.
Hilary Nagelberg

And as we drive past
valley, stream, river, and sky
my mind turns back home

. . . Thoughts of city lights
that could never compare to
such serenity.
Debbie Wang

Exhausted I was.
Smelling of landfills and rocks.
Shower did not help.
Junette Teng

and lastly, not a haiku, but…

We studied the rocks
at all of the stops.
Took a nap on each others lap.
Made a huge fuss
when we got off the bus
But all in all
The trip was a ball!
Doreen Rovelli
