Weekly Assignments
Week 1 – Using the form provided – How has the world done ? - compare where we are on Earth today compared to 1973.
- Evaluate the impacts of various every resources based on your current knowledge and perceptions. Also ask 5 others to fill out the form.
Week 2 – complete the items below and report the results in your journal.
- Find out – what form(s) of energy are used in your home (primary residence other than dorm room).
- For one appliance or item that uses energy – calculate energy use per hour. For example, how much energy does it take to dry clothes?
Here is an example of how to do this
- Do the following calculations:
- How much work is involved for you in climbing from one floor to another (~ 3 meters)? How much power is involved?
To answer this you need to know the acceleration due to gravity, which is given on p. 133 of your text.
- How long would this power a 100 W light bulb?
- How many meters of stairs would you have to climb to burn 100 food Calories? (see p. 63 for calorie conversions.)
Week 3 – To do this exercise you must be using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
- Open the spreadsheet residential energy prices . This is an Excel spreadsheet. Highlight the whole spreadsheet and select copy in the Edit menu. Open a blank Excel spreadsheet on your desktop and highlight the first box and select paste in the edit menu. You can now work with the data.
- Pick information in any two of the columns and prepare graphs to show how prices and expenditures have varied with time. Bring your graphs to class to share so that we can discover which forms of energy have changed the most in prices and expenditures? Which the least?
- Be sure your graphs are carefully labeled.
