A unique marker …for an extraordinary group of women on a special event

This note provides the story behind this selection of our 50th Reunion memento.

It was brought to our attention in one of the College’s publications in early 2008 that floor tiles in Thomas Library were made by the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown, Pa.

M. Carey Thomas herself selected the patterns and color combinations during 1905-1906 in consultation with Henry C. Mercer, the founder of the Tile Works (a National Historic Landmark).  Mercer’s tiles also were used in the old Deanery, post-fire Denbigh, and the Pembroke vestibules.

Voila! The idea for our 50th Reunion commemorative tile was born.  After many visits to the Tile Works, and to Thomas Library; after  consultation with the Head Ceramist at the Tile Works; after application to the Office of Historic Properties of the Department of Parks and Recreation of Bucks County; and after consultation with the BMC Alumnae Association, all permissions were granted for the Tile Works to proceed to strike a special mold of a glazed 6X6 tile which includes the Little Castle and Fleur de Lys designs, both of which were personally selected by Thomas and Mercer for the Thomas Library floor.  Each tile is made from local clay, individually pressed in a mold, hand-glazed and fired in the manner established by Mercer.

Then a nation-wide search began for the appropriate packaging – boxes, bubble wrap, labels, explanatory brochure, tissue wrap, and unique seals.  No effort was spared to make your memento exceptional.

What you have today is a unique, handsome and historic commissioned tile that makes a stunning, personal gift to give to those family and friends who appreciate your commitment to Bryn Mawr and its many legacies. ..as well as something you will have for the rest of your life as a reminder of our 50 year look back to the time we all shared together.

When you return for Reunion, walk down the steps from the entrance to Thomas Library, and look for YOUR DESIGNS!

Only 100 tiles have been struck so far.   After our reunion, the BMC Bookshop will be carrying the tiles at an increased cost over the cost to you now, which is only $40. Attached is the order form flyer, and we urge you to not miss out on this truly unique, custom-packed memento!
