Our Rationale

While not true ontologies - i.e. a specification of a conceptualization Gruber (1983) - we feel that these class diagrams, are useful in displaying how the concepts of metamorphic petrology interrelate (and show some of the inherent difficulties/ambiguities).

Terms in metamorphic petrology are often used interchangeably with respect to rock name, metamorphic grade, metamorphic texture, and/or metamorphic texture. As a very simple example, mylonite is a specific rock name with an explicit mylonitic structure. In other words, all mylonites are mylonitic, but not all mylonitic rocks are mylonites. How do we deal with this case and other more complicated examples?

We have created ontologies for metamorphic textures, metamorphic fabric, and metamorphic grade:

  • metamorphic texture class diagram

  • metamorphic grade class diagram

  • metamorphic fabric class diagram

  • The class trees are always in a constant state of flux. If you don't like it, come back in a day. Better yet, let us know how we can improve!
