Environmental Studies Concentration in Geology

Major in Geology with a Concentration in Environmental Studies (ES) at Bryn Mawr College

The following four classes are required for all ES Concentrators, regardless of major:

  • GEOL 103 Environmental Geology
  • CITY 175 Environment and Society
  • BIOL 220 Ecology
  • GEOL 397 Environmental Senior Seminar

The following courses are required for the Geology major with ES concentration:

  • GEOL 101 Physical Geology
  • CHEM 101  OR   CHEM 103 General Chemistry I (circle one)
  • CHEM 104 General Chemistry II
  • GEOL 202 Mineralogy
  • GEOL 302 Aqueous Geochemistry OR GEOL 328 Geospatial Data Analysis (circle one)
  • GEOL 403 Independent Research (thesis project, fall semester senior year)

Two additional 200-level geology courses:

One additional 300-level course:

  • GEOL 312 Quaternary Geology (every other year)
  • GEOL 314 Marine Geology (every other year)

Two semesters of math, statistics or computational methods (e.g., those listed below, or others approved by the major advisor):

  • MATH 101/102, Calculus with Analytic Geometry I/II
  • MATH 104, Elements of Probability and Statistics
  • MATH 201, Multivariable Calculus
  • MATH 203, Linear Algebra
  • MATH 210, Differential Equations with Applications
  • CMSC 110, Introduction to Computing
  • CMSC 120, Visualizing Information
  • CMSC 205, Introduction to Computer Science
  • CMSC 206, Introduction to Data Structure
  • GEOL 250, Computational Models in the Sciences

All ES concentrators choose two environment-related courses from outside the natural sciences. One of these should cover topics related to Planning and Policy, e.g.:

  • CITY/ANTH 190, Form of the City
  • CITY 227, Topics in Modern Planning
  • CITY 229, Comparative Urbanism
  • ECON 234, Environmental Economics
  • POLS/CITY 222, Introduction to Environmental Issues
  • One should address issues of Humans in the Environment, e.g.,
  • ANTH 203, Human Ecology
  • ENGL 204, Literatures of American Expansion
  • ENGL 309, Native American Literature
  • HIST/CITY 237, Urbanization in Africa
