ASC Thermal Demagnetizer –
This machine thermally demagnetizes multiple geologic samples - one of the two main demagnetization techniques used by paleomagnetists. It features a large internal cylindrical oven (heating capacity up to 700 o C +/- 5 o C) that is triple-layered in mu-metal. This layering completely eliminates any external magnetic field from the heating area. Consequently, when samples are heated to elevated temperatures and cooled, the samples natural magnetization that was stable up to the heated temperature is completely randomized – in essence the magnetization becomes zero, leaving only the magnetization that is stable at elevated temperatures.
