Fellowships for Excellence in the Classics

In addition to the regular fellowships and scholarships, three special Fellowships for Excellence in the Classics are awarded each year on the recommendation of the Classical Committee to new students in the Departments of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, Greek, and Latin.

Fellowships listed below are awarded on an annual basis unless otherwise indicated. Refer to fellowship organization websites for complete information.

PHMC Student Internship Program - Summer 2005
Deadline: February 25; notification: April 15
The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) invites applications to its Student Internship Program for Summer 2005. PHMC, an agency of Pennsylvania state government, is the official history agency of the Commonwealth, responsible for preserving, documenting, and interpreting the state's diverse history and making this history accessible to the public.

Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships
Deadline: February 1; notification: April 15
Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships are designed to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

ARIT - The American Research Institute in Turkey
National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships for Research in Turkey 2005-2006
Deadline: November 1; notification: January 25
The American Research Institute in Turkey takes pleasure in inviting applications for two or three advanced fellowships made possible by support from the National humanities and include humanistically oriented aspects of the social sciences, prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguistics, as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history. The fellowships for research in Turkey may be held for four to twelve continuous months during 2005-2006. Stipends in the range of $13,335 to $40,000 are available on the basis of individual proposals.

AIA - Archaeological Institute of America

The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies
Deadline: December 1
The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies are designed to support exceptionally promising students as they pursue advanced study in the disciplines of the humanities. The Mellon Fellowship is a competitive award for first-year doctoral students only and cannot be deferred. Summer study is not included. Each year, approximately 85 fellowships are available. The fellowship covers full graduate tuition and required fees for the first year of graduate study and includes a one-year stipend of $17,500.

The American Academy in Rome
Deadline: November 1
The Rome Prize is awarded annually to 15 emerging artists (working in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, Historic Preservation and Conservation, Literature, Musical Composition, or Visual Arts) and 15 scholars (working in Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and early Modern, or Modern Italian Studies). Rome Prize fellowships are designed for emerging artists and for scholars in the early or middle stages of their careers.

The Dan David Foundation
Deadline: November 30
The DAN DAVID PRIZE annually awards 3 prizes of US$ 1 million each for achievements having an outstanding scientific, technological, cultural or social impact on our world. Each year fields are chosen within the three Time Dimensions - Past, Present and Future. The laureates for a given year are chosen from these fields.

American Center of Oriental Research
Deadline: February 1; notification: April 15
The Kress Fellowship in the Art and Archaeology of Jordan: One or more three- to six-month fellowships for pre-doctoral students completing dissertation research in an art historical topic: art history, archaeology, architectural history, and in some cases classical studies. The maximum award for six months is $18,500.

    Fellowships are open to those in ancient Near Eastern studies, including the fields of archaeology, anthropology, art history, Bible, epigraphy, historical geography, history, language, literature, philology and religion or related disciplines from Pre-history, through the early Islamic period.
