The Folger Institute is a center for advanced study in the humanities sponsored by the Folger Shakespeare Library and a consortium of forty-one colleges and universities. Institute programs gather graduate students and faculty from a variety of disciplines and institutions. Folger Institute programs are offered in several formats, including yearlong colloquia, semester-length seminars and skills courses, and weekend seminars and symposia. Consortium grants-in-aid are available by application to faculty members and graduate students from consortium universities who participate in Folger Institute programs. These grants are funded by the annual membership fees of consortium universities. The Institute does not award grades, certificates, or degrees, but it is normally possible for graduate students to receive credit at their home institutions for participation in semester-length seminars. SUPPORT PROVIDED: Seminar registration fees are waived for consortium affiliates. Others must pay a $500 fee or, in the case of a single-session weekend seminar, $200. Grants-in-aid are offered as a contribution to travel and lodging expenses in support of participation in Institute programs. Awards for time released from teaching may be made to faculty members at local consortium schools. A limited number of fee waivers are available to independent scholars by application. Travel grants are also available by the same application process to programs sponsored by the Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies. The Roberto Longhi Foundation for History of Art Studies announces the availability of a number of fellowships for the year 2012-2013, beginning October 1, 2012. The fellowships are designed for those who seriously want to dedicate themselves to research in the history of art. SUPPORT PROVIDED: The fellowships will be paid in monthly installments over a period of nine months, beginning in October 2012 until June 2013. The total amount of the grant will be 5,400 Euro. The fellowships will be mainly granted by the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze. A Fellowship in memory of Nicola Pauer d'Ankerfeld will be issued. Two fellowships will be granted with the contribution of Mario Modestini Foundation. One more fellowship will be attributed with the contribution of Susan Grundy. The Fellowships holders may make use of the study materials available in the Institute, which mainly concern Italian painting from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. At the end of the academic year, a written report with the results of the research undertaken must be submitted. The Fondazione Longhi reserves the right of first publication of the above described research results. It is forbidden to take up other scholarships of every kind and to take part in any activity that could interfere with the accomplishment of the above mentioned duties. The Hagley Museum and Library is located along the Brandywine River on the site of the first du Pont powder works, providing a unique glimpse into American life at home and at work in the nineteenth century. Set amid more than 230 acres of trees and flowering shrubs, Hagley offers a diversity of restorations, exhibits, and live demonstrations. The Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society organizes and administers Hagley's interactions with the world of scholarship. Effort is concentrated in Hagley's areas of research and collection interest: American economic, business, industrial, and technological history. Exploratory Research Grants support one-week visits by scholars who believe that their project will benefit from Hagley research collections, but need the opportunity to explore them onsite to determine if a Henry Belin du Pont research grant application is warranted. Proposals must demonstrate which Hagley collections might be pertinent to the project. SUPPORT PROVIDED: The stipend is $400. Low-cost accommodations on Hagley's grounds are available on first-come, first serve basis. Researchers who use this housing are strongly encouraged to have a car available for transportation during their residency. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) awards up to ten German Chancellor Fellowships annually to young, prospective leaders from the USA, the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China with funds made available by the German Federal Foreign Office. The fellows must have shown outstanding potential for future leadership in their previous careers. The program is established under the patronage of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and addresses applicants from all professions and fields of study giving preference to the humanities, law, social and economic sciences. SUPPORT PROVIDED: The Humboldt Foundation grants up to ten German Chancellor Fellowships annually for prospective leaders. The fellowship stipend ranges from EUR 2,150 to EUR 2,750 per month (in exceptional cases up to EUR 3,650 per month). This includes a mobility lump sum and a contribution towards health and liability insurance. For fellows with little or no German language skills the stay in Germany begins with a mandatory four-month intensive language course from May through August. The fellowship is awarded for twelve months and commences in September with a four-week introductory seminar in Bonn and Berlin, followed by the individual project work starting in October. The Library of Congress invites qualified scholars to conduct research in the John W. Kluge Center using the Library of Congress collections and resources for a period of up to eleven months. Established in 2000 through an endowment of $60 million from John W. Kluge, the Center is located in the splendid Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. The Kluge Center furnishes attractive work and discussion space for Kluge Chair holders, for distinguished visiting scholars, and for postdoctoral Fellows supported by other private foundation gifts. Residents have easy access to the Library's specialized staff and to the intellectual community of Washington. The Kluge Center especially encourages humanistic and social science research that makes use of the Library's large and varied collections. Interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, or multi-lingual research is particularly welcome. Among the collections available to researchers are the world's largest law library and outstanding multi-lingual collections of books and periodicals. Deep special collections of manuscripts, maps, music, films, recorded sound, prints and photographs are also available. Kluge Fellows will give one public presentation of their research and provide a final report on their research and its results. The University Libraries, Northern Illinois University, invite applications for the Horatio Alger Fellowship for the Study of American Popular Culture. Funding is available to scholars who will be using materials from the Libraries' major holdings in American popular culture. These holdings include the Albert Johannsen and Edward T. LeBlanc Collections of more than 50,000 dime novels, and the nation's preeminent collections related to Horatio Alger, Jr. and Edward Stratemeyer. Many other authors are represented. Topics that could draw on the collections' strengths might include the plight of urban children, image of the American West in popular literature, widespread use of pseudonyms, and stereotypical portrayals. SUPPORT PROVIDED: The Fellowship award consists of a $1,500 stipend. The Ragdale Foundation is a nonprofit artists community that supports emerging and established writers (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, play/screenwriting), composers, and visual and performance artists from all over the world. Ragdale is a beautiful historic estate that was built by Howard Van Doren Shaw. The Foundation rests at the edge of 50 acres of preserved prairie, 30 miles north of Chicago. SUPPORT PROVIDED: Undisturbed time, space, and meals are provided for periods of two weeks to two months. The residency fee is $35 per day. (Financial aid is available on a limited basis; applications are available upon acceptance to the residency program.) Ragdale can accommodate 8 writers (4 during the current renovation of one of our buildings), 3-4 artists, and 1 composer during each residency session. All but one residents' quarters are combined live/work spaces. Writers' rooms each have a large desk and a variety of reference materials. They are located on the second floor of both the Barnhouse and Ragdale House buildings. Although private, the rooms are adjacent to each other and share hallways. The composer's studio has a baby grand piano and doubles as a visual art studio. The space is not completely soundproof, but is separated from the writers' rooms. Located in a separate building called the Friends' Studio, it shares a bathroom with one visual art studio adjacent to it. All visual artists' studios have natural light and a sink/running water as well as tables, stools, and chairs or couches. Artists are assigned spaces that are suited to the projects they proposed in their work plan. Special facilities and equipment such as a wood shop, darkrooms, kilns, or printing presses are not available, though residents may bring their own tools and supplies if needed. Password protected wireless internet is available in all three buildings if requested. APPLICANT INFORMATION: Ragdale welcomes artists at all stages of their careers and seeks to create a mix of various experience levels in each group of residents. Through a competitive application process, Ragdale offers residencies to visual artists, writers, composers, and interdisciplinary artists. Those working in sound, performance, choreography, or combinations of disciplines are also encouraged to apply under the Interdisciplinary category. The National Museum of American History (NMAH) Lemelson Center Fellows Program supports projects that present creative approaches to the study of invention and innovation in American society. The Travel to Collections Awards Program supports research on the history of invention and innovation based on the holdings of the Museum's Archives Center and curatorial divisions. The Archives Center holds more than 20,000 feet of archival materials. The collections are particularly strong in personal papers and business records documenting the history of American enterprise and technology. SUPPORT PROVIDED: Awards are provided for a maximum of 10 days with a stipend up to $150 per day. The travel award may be used to cover transportation and living expenses, and copying pertinent archival resources. Awards may not be used to extend other Smithsonian appointments. Only one award can be offered to a visitor within a twelve-month period. The Society for the History of Technology was formed in 1958 to encourage the study of the development of technology and its relations with society and culture. International Scholars shall act as ambassadors for the Society in their countries and regions, both by informing the Society about the state and developments of the history of technology in their regions, and by helping to disseminate information about the Society and its activities. SUPPORT PROVIDED: Each year the Society for the History of Technology designates up to four International Scholars for a two-year term. APPLICANT INFORMATION: To become a SHOT International Scholar, applicants must reside and work in underrepresented countries at the time of selection. Graduate students, post-docs, and visiting scholars who are living and working in the United States or Western Europe are not eligible to become International Scholars; however, they are eligible to apply once they return to their home countries. Of these potential candidates, anyone at any rank, from graduate student up through senior scholar, is eligible to become an International Scholar. The Society for the History of Technology was formed in 1958 to encourage the study of the development of technology and its relations with society and culture. The Society for the History of Technology normally awards some grants to support travel to its annual meeting. SUPPORT PROVIDED: Grants may range up to $750 for travel on the same continent (for example, to Pittsburgh, from within elsewhere in North America) and up to $1,000 for travel from a different continent. Travel grant funds may be used only for travel expenses and basic conference registration. APPLICANT INFORMATION: The program is focused on graduate students, independent scholars, and young professionals just beginning their careers, as well as SHOT International Scholars. Through the English Language Fellow Program (EL Fellow) highly qualified U.S. educators in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) participate in 10-month-long fellowships at academic institutions throughout the world. The EL Fellow Program fosters mutual understanding, promotes English language learning and enhances English teaching capacity abroad. Through projects sponsored by U.S. embassies, EL Fellows share their professional expertise, hone their skills, gain international experience and learn about other cultures. EL Fellows model and demonstrate TESOL classroom practices that help foster thoughtful and responsible behavior in students and teachers of English. More than 1,000 EL Fellows have conducted projects in more than 80 countries. Examples of past EL Fellow projects include: Classroom Teaching, Teacher Training, In-Service and Pre-Service Training, Curriculum Development, Workshop and Seminar Design, Program Evaluation, Needs Assessment, Testing, and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). SUPPORT PROVIDED: (A) A generous stipend deposited directly to the Fellow's U.S. checking account. For the AY 2012-2013, Fellows receive $25,000; Senior Fellows receive $35,000; (B) Living Allowance, which varies from country to country, is designed to cover the cost of reasonable, safe, and comfortable housing (comparable to the standard of living in the country of assignment), food, utilities, and local transportation to and from work for one person; (C) international round-trip transportation from the Fellow's residence to the host country; (D) supplemental medical/hospitalization health care coverage up to $50,000 per illness/injury while abroad (not to replace any health insurance held by the Fellow); (E) Program Activities Allowance (PAA): Funds are given to purchase educational materials and supplement and enhance EL Fellows' English Language Activities in the host country. (F) $600 Shipping Allowance to cover shipping costs to and from assignment (this includes paying for baggage carts, any overweight accompanying luggage, and the costs of shipping any unaccompanied belongings from and back to the United States); (G) $700 Pre-Departure Allowance to cover predeparture costs including visas, medical examinations, malaria prophylaxis (if necessary), and other expenses incurred prior to departure, including transportation to the airport; and (H) Dependent's Allowance (Senior Fellows only): Senior Fellows are eligible to receive a $5,000 Dependent's Allowance designed to assist with the expenses of accompanying dependent(s). A Fellow's spouse and/or dependent(s) may accompany a Fellow for all or part of the fellowship period. A spouse and/or dependent(s) are the sole responsibility of the Fellow. The EL Fellow Program does not offer any employment opportunities or logistical support for spouses or dependents. Senior Fellows may request a dependent's allowance for financial support for spouses or dependents. APPLICANT INFORMATION: Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria: (1) US citizenship; (2) master's in TEFL/TESL, Applied Linguistics, or other fields directly relevant to the accepted projects (TEFL/TESL certification required: State ESL endorsement or TEFL/TESL certificate consisting of minimum of 120 course hours and a supervised practicum); (3) degree must be conferred by end of 2012 spring semester for regular cycle projects and by the end of 2012 summer semester for off-cycle projects; (4) fellows must have minimum three years experience in teaching English to nonnative speakers (one year of experience equals two semesters of 15-16 contact hours/week); (5) Senior Fellows must have minimum four years of teacher training experience and one year of overseas TEFL experience; (6) two confidential letters of recommendation from professional or academic contacts, including one letter from a current or most recent supervisor, submitted by references directly through the on-line application. Letters older than two years are considered invalid. Former Fellows must provide a written recommendation from the PAS/RELO overseeing the Fellow's most recent fellowship; and (7) if your qualifying degree was awarded by a non-U.S. institution you must have your degree evaluated by an educational credential evaluation service. The Vermont Studio Center hosts 50 artists and writers each month who participate in 4 to 12 week independent studio Residencies. VSC Residents represent a mix of mediums, cultures, experience, and ages, for a diverse and vibrant community. VSC awards a number of fellowships for 4-week residencies throughout the year. VSC awards a number of fellowships for 8-week residencies to international residents from specific countries. SUPPORT PROVIDED: More than 150 fellowships will be awarded over the coming year and provide the fee for a four-week residency. In addition, fellowship stipends range from $400-$2,000. Each International residency award comes with round-trip air travel, travelers health insurance, an exhibition in the Red Mill Gallery, and other benefits depending on the award. APPLICATION INFORMATION: To apply for a special fellowship award, applicants should note any additional award name(s) for which they are eligible. While application for residency may be submitted at any time, applicants who wish to be considered for a fellowship must submit their application by one of the three annual fellowship deadlines. There is a $25 application fee. To apply for an International Fellowship, please download an application and mail it in by April 1 with supporting materials. Those artists not eligible for these awards are welcome to apply for Vermont Studio Center Fellowships at February 15, June 15 and October 1.
