As
of September, 2005, the general requirement that all Ph.D.
students demonstrate proficiency in two foreign languages,
or one language and one other skill, has been eliminated.
Instead, language requirements are determined by individual
programs in accordance with the research needs of the disciplines
they represent. The new policy applies to all students
who first enrolled in 2005 and to all who enroll subsequently.
Students who entered the GSAS before 2005 may fulfill the
skills requirement for the Ph.D. under either the old or
the new regulations, at their discretion. That is,
students who have prepared for a foreign language examination
may proceed to take it, even if their department no longer
requires it, and if they pass, the language will be entered
on their transcript as a milestone.

These requirements supersede those described in the 2005-2006 GSAS Handbook and in other previous publications. They may not be changed by any department or program without approval by the Graduate Council and advance notification to all graduate students currently enrolled.
