Application for Ph.D. Candidacy
CHECKLIST
OF REQUIREMENTS FOR THE M.A. DEGREE
Units
of work: at least 6
- at
least 2 units must be graduate courses or seminars
- a
maximum of 2 units may be units of supervised work (USWs)
- up
to 2 units may be 300-level undergraduate courses with
supplementary work
Special
skills requirements: vary by department
Application
for M.A. candidacy: required
to receive the degree
- must be made not later
than one week (seven days) after the beginning of the semester
in which the candidate wishes to take the degree
- deadlines
for 2008-2009 are September 8, 2008 for
December degrees and December 19, 2008 for
May degrees
Paper or thesis:
- must
be read and approved by at least two members of the student's
department, or by one member of the student's department
and by one member of an allied department
Final
examination:
- must
be taken after all course work, the thesis, and any skills
requirements have been completed
- tests
ability to place the special field of the thesis in a more
general background
- may
be written (4-6 hours) or oral (at least one hour), or both
- must
be taken on or before the last Monday before Commencement
(May 11, 2009) or before grades are due
for a degree on Dec. 15 (on or before December 7,
2008)
- can
be replaced by a Ph.D. Preliminary Examination that covers
the special field of the thesis
Time
limit:
Faculty Rules require that the
M.A. degree must be completed within 60 months of the student's
first enrollment in the GSAS.
CHECKLIST
OF REQUIREMENTS FOR THE Ph.D. DEGREE
Units
of work: at least 12 (18 in Clinical Developmental
Psychology)
- a maximum of 4 units may be taken
at the University of Pennsylvania or at another reciprocating
institution
- in Graduate Group in Archaeology,
Classics and History of Art, must include one GSem
Special
skills requirements: vary by department.
Application
for Ph.D. candidacy: required to take
Ph.D. Preliminary Examinations
- can be made as soon as sufficient
coursework (as determined by the department chair) has been
completed
- requires a dissertation director
- department appoints Ph.D. Supervising
Committee, comprising the dissertation director and three
other faculty members
- GSAS appoints Supervising Committee
chair
Preliminary
Examinations: must be taken before dissertation
is submitted
- can be taken as soon as skills
requirements have been fulfilled
- format varies by department; consult
Handbook or Rules of the General Faculty
Dissertation:
- in the humanities, must be submitted
at least 45 days prior to the end of classes of the semester
in which the student expects to complete the work for the
degree (October 15, 2008 or March
17, 2009)
- in Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics,
and Clinical Developmental Psychology, must be submitted
at least 25 days prior to the end of classes of the semester
in which the student expects to complete the work for the
degree (November 5, 2008 or April
6, 2009)
- must be accompanied by a letter
from the dissertation director recommending the dissertation
to the Supervising Committee
- must include abstract and author's
c.v.
Final
Examination: oral examination on the dissertation
- if more than 60 months have elapsed
since the candidate's first Preliminary Examination, must
include written and oral re-testing on one of the fields
of the prelims
