Registration
Procedures
The
registration period for Semester I, 2008 is April 14-18 .
The registration
form can be downloaded here, or picked up in your department
or in the GSAS office in Thomas. As in the past, ALL
registration forms must be submitted to the student's department
chair or graduate advisor for approval before the GSAS can
accept them as evidence of registration. Your chair
can forward your approved form to the GSAS electronically,
or it can be presented to the GSAS on paper with the requisite
signatures. Please note that some chairs or advisors may require
students to register in person for courses and USWs.
It is every student's responsibility to ascertain the policy
of her or his department in this respect.
Students
who are registering for fewer than two units who wish to be
certified Full-Time for Loan Deferral or other purposes should
complete the Declaration of Full-Time Study and return it to the GSAS
Office by September 19, 2008 for Fall 2008 and February 6, 2009 for Spring 2009. Note that the form must be signed by the chair
before it is submitted to the GSAS.
Registration
period for Semester II 2009 (Nov. 10-14). After
November 16th, changing registration requires the filing of a Drop/Add form signed by the Department Chair or Graduate Advisor. The deadline for filing Drop/Add requests is February 6, 2009. No changes at all may be made after that date.
Remember that no registration for independent work (USW) can
be accepted without the written approval of the faculty member
designated as supervisor of the work. This approval can be
forwarded by the chair or graduate advisor electronically
if this is the department's preferred procedure. Otherwise,
the necessary signature(s) must appear on the paper registration
form.
Please
note the following important regulations:
(1) No student's registration can be finally approved if s/he
has an outstanding balance with the comptroller.
(2) Continuing students who fail to register will be given
a default registration of one unit, for which they will have
to pay ($5,090).
There
are four categories of registration: Course, Audit, Unit of
Supervised Work (701), and Continuing Enrollment.
•
Units of Supervised Work USWs are for students who
are actively and regularly consulting with a professor and/or
using laboratory facilities, and doing work which merits credit
and an evaluation by a professor. The fee for each USW
is one-sixth of a tuition unit ($815). One registers
for a USW just as for a seminar.
•
Continuing Enrollment (CE) is for students working towards
a degree without formal faculty supervision. CE gives half-time
status. Registration for CE does not carry credit, nor
does it result in a grade or an evaluation by a professor.
The fee for CE is $415 per semester.
All
graduate students wishing to maintain their matriculated status
must register for one or more units of work or for Continuing
Enrollment. The GSAS no longer has the category
"NR" (for Not Registered). Students who do not register will
be automatically registered for one (1) unit, as described
above.
Students
will be billed for registrations in excess of the number of
units awarded as financial aid.
