Internship: Lourdes Center for Public Health, Camden NJ
My summer internship focused on educating patients about various health topics through weekly education series in the Osborn Family Health Clinic which serves a primarily low income, minority popualtion with limited or no health insurance. Topics covered in the educaiton series included promoting reading among young children in pediatrics, stress managament, breastfeeding, preconception education, diabetes and nutrition, and kid's safety and hygeine. In additon I organized two health fairs at Osborn: the first one focusing on environmental health education and the second one on topics pertaining to healthy lifestyle choices. In order to fund the second health fair I applied for and recieved a Community Health Benefits Mini Grant from Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center. A total of 19 organizations from the Camden community and Lourdes Medical Center particpated in the two fairs. My internship experience showed me the important role educaiton plays in empowering people to take a more active role in mainting their own health. In addition it gave me the opportunity to interact with patients, Lourdes' hospital associates and community nonprofit organziations in the Camden area.
