Internship: Language Development Early Intervention
From the moment I heard about this language intervention internship I felt like it had been tailor made for me. I have been working extensively with preschool children in the past few years and love interacting with this age group. In addition I was seeking an opportunity to practice experiential learning in psychology, and in the domain of intervention, after studying developmental disorders in many of my psychology classes. The actual internship experience definitely lived up to my high expectations. I spent the mornings in the Language Enrichment Preschool Program camp, run out of the Phebe Anna Thorne School. There I assisted the specialists in the language stimulation activities provided for children, aged three to five, with language impairment. In the afternoon I modeled these activities for individual and small groups of targeted children with language difficulties, but limited economic resources, at the Montgomery Early Learning Center in Norristown. In addition to learning a great deal about language processes from both academic literature and practice-based experience, I gained confidence in myself as a force for improving the lives of others through early intervention.
