INDEPENDENCE M A L L

Evolution of U r b a n S p a c e

This website will showcase four figure-ground maps depicting the evolution of the urban fabric throughout the INHP and Independence Mall sites. It is important to understand that in these maps, solids (black) represent the built environment and voids (white) correspond with open space.

While these figure-ground images inform the spatial relationships horizontally within the built fabric, other visual resources would be helpful in order to understand the vertical impacts to the built form.

Furthermore, from perusing this website, the figure-ground maps are used to reveal and remind people of the historical progression of changes in scale and density in the urban landscape, and stimulate questions pertaining to why and how the urban landscape changes.
