Before 1720, there were no Catholic parishes in the outer counties of what would become the Philadelphia Archdiocese, nor any in Philadelphia County either.

At this time, there was no Catholic hierarchy in the Colonies, and all the Catholics living in those areas fell under the pastoral care of missionaries - at this time almost all Jesuits - under the direction of bishops in Britain.
