The historic drawing on the left shows a double lot containing a residence on the right and a workshop on the left, separated by an alley. The exact dates of construction for these two structures are unknown, but obviously prior to 1857 as illustrated on the atlas. The following is a table describing the evolution of the lots from 1857 to 1956. It was determined that at the time of the drawing, the lots were both owned by Alexander Robb. They were transferred as a parcel three times, ending with a sale to George Griffiths in April of 1867. In November of that same year, he divided the property and sold the west portion (alley and shop) to Charles G. Artzt. Sometime between 1867 and 1869, the shop at 515 Spruce St. was demolished and a new three story masonry dwelling was constructed. Probably at the same time, the building at 513 Spruce St. was also demolished and replaced with a matching three story brick building. These buildings still exist on the lots today. Also note that 509 Spruce St. (pictured on the right edge of the drawing and photo) remained unchanged from 1861 to 2004.
