The Center and Faculty
Our Faculty Research Grant Program continues to be one of the Center's
most important activities. We have funded many worthy research
proposals.
Focus of our studies
It is important to remember that the Center for International
Studies was established to encourage the development of work on
causes and consequences of what we have called "Border Crossings/Crossing
Borders", a broad rubric under which a number
of studies have been started or continued. We anticipate also
that much of this work will be multi-disciplinary and/or comparative
in approach. Our aim is to foster scholarly activity and research
which involves use the use of paradigms from more than one discipline,
so that interdisciplinary work will be undertaken for the purpose
of scholarship and pedagogy on border crossings. In some cases,
these projects will involve collaboration between faculty in more
than one discipline.
Staff Eligibility
Staff members are eligible for the Faculty Research Grant Program. Interested staff should contact the Co-Directors for advise and guidelines.
Funding
The Center is responsible together with the President for administering
the Center's internal funds. The Center's Steering Committee selects
the projects to be funded. The Center expects budgets to be detailed
and to do everything possible to minimize costs. To promote faculty
research, in teams or individually, the Center has set aside a
reasonable amount of funding to cover research expenses and summer
stipends for individuals and two-three member teams. In many cases,
these collaborations can produce funding for limited student involvement
in the form of research assistantships and, possibly, internships.
Funds can be used for travel purposes, books and clerical costs
of the project, and personnel costs. Faculty who wish to hire
research assistants from among the Bryn Mawr College student body
should include financial requests in their proposals. We recommend
that you seek estimates of transportation expenses before submitting
your proposal. Anyone who has already received college funding
for the proposed project is asked to make that clear in the application.
When available funds are insufficient to meet the needs of all
deserving applicants, the Center gives preference to those who
have not recently received funds for research purposes from college
sources.
