The Center and Students
Our Student Research Grant Program continues to be one of our
most important activities. We have funded many worthy research
proposals.
Focus of our studies
It is important to remember that the Center for International
Studies was established to encourage the development of work on
causes and consequences of what we have called "border crossings".
We anticipate that much of this work will be multi-disciplinary
and/or comparative in approach. It is our hope that our lecture
series and various vehicles for interaction and discussion between
faculty and students will contribute to an atmosphere where the
pursuit of studies of border crossings takes on an increased importance
and greater interest on the part of members of the academic community.
Funding
The Center is responsible together with the President for administering
the Center's internal funds. The Center's Steering Committee selects
the projects to be funded. The Center expects budgets to be detailed
and to do everything possible to minimize costs.
It is expected that the funds can be used for travel purposes,
books and clerical costs of the project. Anyone who has already
received additional funding, whether from Bryn Mawr College or
elsewhere, for the proposed project is asked to make that clear
in the application.
Working under the supervision of a Bryn Mawr faculty member,
a student may be incorporated into an on-going faculty research
project. With faculty supervision, a student may devise her own
project or may be linked with a faculty member, who is engaged
in a research project for which a research assistant could be
helpful. We think of places such as Tokyo, Nairobi, Dublin, London,
Moscow, Paris or Avignon, South Asia, and Latin America where
the College has ties. Additionally, in consultation with a faculty member and/or an on-site supervisor, a student may seek funding to support an internship with an organization in another country. In this case, students must identify a topic of inquiry, the exploration of which will be enhanced through their work in a particular organization. Students may choose to spend time abroad
at the end of their junior year to undertake research needed for
the completion of a major thesis in the senior year. In this case,
the applicant would have to show evidence that a research proposal
has been worked out with the major department. Needless to say,
all accepted proposals would have to have topics consistent with
the mission of the Center.

How to Apply
Students must apply to the Center using the accompanying
Grant Application Form. Grant Deadline: Friday, March 7, 2008
In addition to the Grant Application Form, students should submit:
1. A one to three page description of the research project that includes:
a) a personal statement indicating the student's interest and the
nature of the research assistantship and/or internship position being
sought. Reference should be made to the particular skills that the applicants have to offer in an assistantship and/or internship;
b) The specific tasks this grant will support, including a timetable of activities;
c) Goals to be met by the completion of the project.
2. Resumé
3. A detailed budget and justification of need.
4. Student's major plan of study and future academic study.
5. Official student transcript (four copies may be made from the original).
6. Letter of support by a Bryn Mawr faculty member and outside faculty person, if relevant. In the case of an application seeking funding to support an internship with a specific organization, include a letter of support from the proposed on-site supervisor.
Five (5) collated copies of all application materials must be submitted.
Grant applicants may not already be in their
senior year. This is to ensure that they can fulfill the
requirement of returning to Bryn Mawr the year after completion
of their research project to report on their findings to the Center
as well as fellow students.
Grants may only be used for research taking
place during the summer. The Center does
not fund research that takes place during fall, winter, or spring
breaks.
Submit completed applications to Margaret Kelly, Secretary, Center
for International Studies, in 235 Thomas Hall (x5334).
